MUMBAI – Indian telecommunications operators added 1.95 million mobile users in April, with Reliance Industries Ltd.'s Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Bharti Airtel Ltd. being the only companies to net-add subscribers, according to data shared by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Thursday. Vodafone Idea Ltd., Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. lost subscribers. Overall, the addition of wireless mobile subscribers in April was lower than the 2.93 million added in March.
Reliance Jio added 2.64 million users in April, more than the 2.17 million users added in the previous month. Bharti Airtel added 170,658 subscribers in April, sharply lower than the 1.25 million users it had gained in March.
Debt-ridden telecom company Vodafone Idea lost 647,620 subscribers in April, higher than the 541,377 subscribers it lost in March. BSNL and MTNL lost 155,000 and 67,668 subscribers, respectively, in April.
The share of urban subscribers in wireless telecom services in April was 54.29%, while rural subscribers accounted for the remaining 45.71%.
Private-sector telecom companies Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea collectively held a market share of 92.08% as of Apr. 30, slightly higher than the 92.04% share they held in March. The market shares of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea stood at 33.65%, 40.76%, and 17.66%, respectively. Public-sector companies BSNL and MTNL had a market share of only 7.92% as of April-end, compared with 7.96% a month ago, with BSNL alone cornering a 7.84% share.
In April, India had 1.16 billion wireless subscribers. The number of active wireless mobile subscribers in April was 1.07 billion users, according to TRAI's peak visitor location register. The register is used to measure active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile phone operator's network.
