MUMBAI – A deep depression area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to cause very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over northeastern states, sub-Himalayan Bay of Bengal, and Sikkim till Saturday, the India Meteorological Department said.
As such, the department has issued a red alert for Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Friday, and over Arunachal Pradesh on Friday. The department has issued an orange alert for the same regions for Saturday. A red alert indicates more than 204.4 millimetres of rain in 24 hours, while an orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres.
The department has also said there is a low to moderate risk of flash floods in parts of northeast India in the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has covered the entirety of northeast India and Sikkim as of Thursday. Conditions are favourable for monsoon to advance to more parts of West Bengal and Bihar in the next one to two days, the department said.
The weather bureau has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala till Friday, and over south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on Thursday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over many parts of south India till Saturday, the bureau said. As a result, the bureau has said there is a low to moderate risk of flash floods in these regions during the next 24 hours.
Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted over central Maharashtra on Thursday, and over Konkan and Goa on Sunday and Monday, the weather agency said. Konkan and Goa are also likely to see heavy to very heavy rainfall on Thursday, the agency said.
Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of east and central India till Friday, while very heavy rainfall is seen over parts of Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha on Thursday, the weather department said.
Under the influence of two western disturbances, heavy rainfall is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad till Saturday, over Himachal Pradesh during the weekend, and over Uttarakhand from Friday to Monday, the department said.
The bureau also sees heatwave conditions in west Rajasthan on Friday and Saturday. End
