MUMBAI – India's food grain output for 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at a record 353.9 million tonnes due to record production of rice, maize, groundnut and soybean, according to the third advance estimates released by the government on Wednesday. There was a significant increase in the sowing area in the kharif season, along with an increase in the yield of major kharif crops like paddy, maize, millet, moong, soybean, sugarcane, an official release said.

The Centre has pegged the 2024-25 wheat output at 117.5 million tonnes against 113.3 million tonnes a year ago, according to the release.

The country's rice output this season, as per the third advance estimates, is pegged at 149.1 million tonnes compared to 137.8 million tonnes the previous year, it said. Maize production is seen at 42.3 million tonnes, against 37.7 million tonnes, according to the data. The production of nutritious or coarse grains is estimated to be 62.1 million tonnes, which is 5.20 million tonnes more than the output in 2023-24.

Tur output is estimated at 3.6 million tonnes compared to 3.4 million tonnes last year while chana output in 2024-25 is pegged at 11.3 million tonnes against 11 mln tn last year, and higher than the average gram production from 2018-19 to 2022-23. Chana is the largest variety of pulses grown during the rabi season.

The government has pegged oilseed output at 42.6 million tonnes against 39.7 million tonnes a year ago. The production of soybean is estimated at 15.2 million tonnes compared to 13.1 million tonnes. Groundnut output is pegged at 11.9 million tonnes, up from 10.2 million tonnes the previous year. Production of rapeseed and mustard has been pegged at 12.6 million tonnes this year, it said. Production is increasing continuously and output of pulses and oilseeds needs to be increased, for which efforts are being made, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.

Sugarcane production is pegged at 450.1 million tonnes compared to 453.2 million tonnes and cotton output is seen at 30.6 million bales, against 32.5 million bales in the previous year. One cotton bale is equivalent to 170 kilogram.

Jute production is estimated at 8.4 million bales. One bale of jute is 180 kilogram.

While preparing the estimates, the crop cutting experiments based-yield was considered. The rabi crop production is based on the average yield and is subject to changes in the successive estimates on receipt of better yield estimates based on crop cutting experiments, the release said. The production of various summer crops has been included in the third advance estimates, it said.

These estimates have been primarily prepared on the basis of information received from states. The third advance estimates cover kharif and rabi season, and the summer season.

The following table details the third advance crop estimates for 2024-25 and 2023-24 third advance production estimates for key crops (in mln tn). It also details the change in percentage terms in the third advance estimate for 2024-25 and final estimates for 2023-24:
