KOLKATA/MUMBAI – Bosch Ltd. Thursday said it was in talks with all original equipment makers in the country in the electric vehicles space for the sale and supply of e-axles which will allow the company to further revenues.
In a post-earnings conference call with sector analysts on Thursday, Managing Director Guruprasad Mudlapur said, "We're working with all the OEMs (original equipment makers), talking to them and looking at their platforms. We are in several stages of negotiation with different OEMs."
Mudlapur, who is also the company's chief technology officer, said the scope of work in electric vehicles includes sales and supply of e-axles that are developed and built by Bosch.
The e-axle systems are a compact, cost-attractive electric drive solution for battery-electric vehicles and hybrid applications. The electric motor, power electronics and transmission are combined in a compact unit directly powering the vehicle's axle. This aids in making electric drives less complex. Additionally, the powertrain, which is the system within a vehicle that generates power and delivers it to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move, becomes cheaper, more compact and more efficient.
The commercial vehicle segment presented a mixed picture with electric car and compact natural gas powered vehicles gaining traction, Bosch said. Two-wheelers and tractors, on the other hand, enjoyed a boost from new product launches, festive season sales and supportive rural demand.
"Despite challenges such as inflation and weak consumers and demand, the industry remains optimistic, anticipating continued growth driven by sustained demand for SUVs (sports utility vehicles), the increasing popularity of CNG and directed vehicles, infrastructure projects and expansion of e-commerce and ongoing government initiatives," Mudlapur said adding that the two-wheeler segment is expected to grow going forward.
However, during the quarter ended March, Bosch did not receive any new orders from the electric two-wheelers or three-wheelers segment, the official said. Asked about the impact of increased tariffs ushered in by US President Donald Trump, Mudlapur said Bosch was monitoring the situation and hoped that the tariff concerns would be settled in the coming months.
"This is a very dynamic situation. So, we are monitoring this very closely, and eventually what matters most is what is the landed cost. We hope in the coming months the tariff things are better settled," Mudlapur said.
The company is also hopeful of furthering sales in countries with which India is entering into free trade agreements.
"We just have a trade-in done with the UK. So, there are many of these things which are in the works. And we will have to look at all these things holistically, and then see how the market abroad works, and then take calls on what is best in terms of landed costs for customers when we think of exports out of India," he said.
In the coming two-three years, Bosch aims to outperform the industry growth by primarily focusing on premiumising its portfolio, which will help it offer advanced technology and electrification solutions.
