--IMD: India Mar 1-May 28 rainfall at 161.5 mm, 31% above normal 

 

MUMBAI – India received 6.5 millimetres of rain on Wednesday, 160% above the normal weighted average of 2.5 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. Rainfall was above normal in three of the four homogenous regions of the country and below normal in one.

 

In central India, precipiation shot up a startling 987% to 8.7 millimetres, data from the department showed. South peninsula recieved a whopping 289% above normal rainfall at 11.3 millimeteres, while rainfall in northwest India was 177% above normal at 2.8 millimetres. East and northeast India recieved 3.2 millimetres of rainfall, 60% below the normal of 8.0 millimetres. 

 

While presenting the outlook for temperatures and rainfall for June, India Meteorological Department Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that in Mar-May, the pre-monsoon rainfall was above normal in India. Since Mar. 1, the country has received 161.5 millimetres of rainfall, 31% above the normal weighted average of 123.3 millimetres for the period, the data showed.

 

Though the monsoon arrived May 24, the weather department said rainfall during May will not be accounted in the southwest monsoon. The southwest monsoon hit Kerala Saturday, eight days before the normal onset date of Jun. 1. As of Wednesday, the southwest monsoon has covered the entire south India and some parts of Maharashtra.  End
