--CONTEXT: Govt had set sugar sales quota for May at 2.35 mln tn

NEW DELHI –  The Centre has set the domestic sugar sales quota for June at 2.30 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on the social media platform X on Wednesday. The quota for June is down 2.1% from 2.35 million tonnes in May and nearly 10% from 2.55 million tonnes in June last year.

The government has set the sales quota for June in line with the market expectation of 2.25-2.30 million tonnes. Market foresees demand for sugar as subdued in the coming month amid the monsoon. With temperatures dropping amid heavy rains, demand for ice-creams and soft drinks typically ebbs. If the quota is 2.25-2.30 million tonnes, sugar prices will fall by INR 20-INR 30 per 100 kg," Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary, Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, told Informist earlier.

The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. A lower quota restricts mills from selling the sugar they have produced.

The sugar sector is navigating complex market fundamentals this season--high inventories, a shortfall in production, and a slowdown in demand.

As of May 15, India produced 25.7 million tonnes of sugar in the ongoing 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) sugar season, according to the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association. For the entire season, the association has projected the sugar output at around 26.2 million tonnes. Last year, the country's sugar output was 31.90 million tonnes.  End
