NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved two railway projects worth INR 23.81 billion and INR 10.18 billion in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, respectively, to ensure seamless and faster transportation of both passengers and goods, the government said in a release. The projects will be completed by 2029-30 (Apr-Mar), the release added.
According to the release, the two projects covering four districts across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 176 kilometres. The proposed multi-tracking project will enhance connectivity to approximately 784 villages with a population of about 1.97 million.
The projects will result in an additional freight traffic of 18.40 million tonnes per annum, and also generate direct employment for about 7.4 million human-days during construction, the release said.
The projects would also enhance logistical efficiency by augmenting line capacity along critical routes for transportation of containers, coal, cement, agricultural commodities, and other goods, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a press conference. These improvements are expected to optimise supply chains, thereby facilitating accelerated economic growth, he added.
On the sidelines of the Cabinet briefing, a senior government official said the government aims to add 500-600 more trains by 2030 to mitigate the issue of waiting during non-peak seasons. End
