MUMBAI – The well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast will likely move northwards and develop into a depression in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said Wednesday.
Under its influence, the weather department issued a red alert for very heavy rainfall over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Thursday and over Assam and Meghalaya till Friday. A red alert indicates more than 204.4 millimetres of rain in 24 hours. The weather system is also likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of east and central India till Friday, the department said.
A fresh western disturbance is also likely to cause a fresh spell of very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over Arunachal Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Friday, the department said. The department has issued a red alert in these states for Friday.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has covered the entire south India and some parts of Maharashtra as of Wednesday. Conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance to more parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha, the remaining parts of northeastern states, and some parts of West Bengal and Sikkim in the next two days, the department said.
The weather bureau has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala till Friday, over south interior Karnataka till Thursday, and over Tamil Nadu on Thursday and Friday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected over various parts of southern and western India till Monday.
In northwest India, a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 km per hour is likely till Friday, the weather bureau said.
The bureau also sees heatwave conditions continuing in west Rajasthan till Thursday. End
