In major reshuffle, SC collegium recommends transfer of 21 high court judges

NEW DELHI – In a major reshuffle, the Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai has recommended the transfer of 21 high court judges. Before this, the collegium had in 2023 recommended the transfer of 24 high court judges, the largest such shuffle since the Emergency in 1975-77.
The Allahabad High Court has the maximum number of judges being transferred--four. While Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra has been transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Vivek Chaudhary and Justice Om Prakash Shukla will now work at the Delhi High Court. Justice Jayant Banerji has been sent to the Karnataka High Court.
Three judges each are being transferred from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Gauhati High Court, and Karnataka High Court. Two judges each from the Rajasthan High Court and the Madras High Court are being transferred. The Patna High Court, Telangana High Court, Bombay High Court, and Kerala High Court will see one judge each being transferred out.
Recently, outgoing Justice Duppala Venkata Ramana of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, in his farewell speech, said he was transferred with the intention of harassing him. Ramana had said he was subjected to conspiratorial scrutiny.
According to the memorandum of procedure for appointment of high court judges, judges are transferred for better administration of justice throughout the country. End
