NEW DELHI – The Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended the last date for filing income tax returns for the assessment year 2025-26 or financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) to Sept. 15 from Jul. 31 on account of structural changes and delay in issuing forms.
The returns have undergone structural and content revisions aimed at simplifying compliance, enhancing transparency, and enabling accurate reporting, the apex direct tax body said in a release on Tuesday. "These changes have necessitated additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities," it added.
The extension implies that salaried individuals will get an additional 46 days to file returns. "This extension is expected to mitigate the concerns raised by stakeholders and provide adequate time for compliance, thereby ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the return filing process," the tax department said.
Another reason for giving an extension this year is to facilitate taxpayers to file returns for credits arising from tax deducted at source statements, due for filing by May 31, which are expected to begin reflecting in early June, the department said. The government had, in the past, extended the deadline to file income tax returns primarily due to technical glitches. End
