MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Kerala till Friday, and over coastal Karnataka till Wednesday. The department has also issued a red alert for similar weather conditions over Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, north interior Karnataka, south interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Wednesday, and over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday. A red alert indicates more than 204.4 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.
The department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala till Friday and over interior Karnataka on Tuesday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kilometres per hour is likely over parts of Kerala, coastal Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka till Monday, and over north interior Karnataka till Friday, the weather department said.
Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected over some parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, after which heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely till Monday, the weather agency said.
Parts of Konkan and Goa are likely to see heavy to very heavy rainfall till Monday, while similar weather conditions are seen over some pockets of central Maharashtra till Thursday, the agency said. Extremely heavy rainfall is also expected over the same regions on Tuesday, it said.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over northeast India till Monday, and over east and central India till Saturday, the weather bureau said. Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Mizoram on Wednesday, over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday and Friday, and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Friday, the bureau said.
The bureau has forecast hailstorms over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Tuesday and Wednesday. The bureau also sees heatwave conditions continuing in west Rajasthan till Wednesday.
Conditions are favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon in some more parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, north Bay of Bengal, and west-central India, the remaining parts of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and northeastern states, and some parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Sikkim in the next two-three days, the weather department said.
