MUMBAI – The sowing of summer crops across India reached 8.22 million hectares as of Friday, marking an 11.5% increase from 7.38 million hectares a year ago, according to data released by the agriculture ministry. Rice, the country's largest summer crop by both acreage and production, saw a 13% rise in acreage to 3.42 million hectares from 3.01 million hectares a year ago.
According to the report, the area under coarse cereals also grew, rising nearly 11% on year to 1.44 million hectares. Maize, the leading coarse cereal in terms of area and production during the summer season, saw acreage increase to 880,000 hectares from 737,000 hectares a year ago. On the other hand, the acreage under bajra, the second-largest coarse cereal, fell to 490,000 hectares from 496,000 hectares.
The total area sown under all pulses stood at 2.43 million hectares, up nearly 13% on year, the report showed. Under pulses, the acreage of moong rose to 2.10 million hectares from 1.87 million hectares while that of urad expanded to 307,000 hectares from 257,000 hectares a year ago. Arrivals of the summer moong crop have begun in spot markets in states such as Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, local traders said.
The total area under all oilseeds rose to 945,000 hectares from 923,000 hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Sesamum, the primary summer oilseed crop, saw a slight decline of nearly 1%, with acreage at 470,000 hectares. Groundnut acreage rose by nearly 5% to 431,000 hectares while sunflower sowing surged 16% on year to 36,000 hectares, according to the data.
