MUMBAI – Water level in 161 key reservoirs across India fell to 53.578 billion cubic metres as of Thursday from 55.486 billion cubic metres on May 15, data with the Central Water Commission showed. The current level is 29.37% of the total live storage capacity of 182.444 billion cubic metres.

 

Despite the decline, the water level as of Thursday was up 20.43% from a year ago and 17.8% above the 10-year average for this period.

 

In the northern region--which includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab--reservoirs held 5.721 billion cubic metres of water, which is 28.8% of their total live storage capacity. This is largely same as 28.35% at the same period last year. 

 

Reservoirs in the eastern region, comprising Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar, held 5.538 billion cubic metres of water, or 25.49% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 31.47% in the corresponding period last year.

 

The water level in the western region was 11.737 billion cubic metres or 31.42% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in the region, against 25.33% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 15.854 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 32.63% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 30.88% a year ago.

 

The water level in the southern region was 14.727 billion cubic metres, 26.81% of the total live storage capacity of 45 reservoirs in the region, the data showed. This region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was just 13.76% of the total live storage capacity, which is much below the current level.

 

Since Mar. 1, the country has received 148.7 millimetres of rainfall, 26% above the normal weighted average of 118.3 mm for the period, the India Meteorological Department said.  End
