NEW DELHI – Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will visit the US on a three-day visit starting Tuesday to hold talks on the strategic initiatives announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US in February. Misri will meet with senior officials of the US Administration to follow up on the initiative, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

"The visit is a follow-up to the prime minister's visit to the US in February 2025, when both sides had launched the India-US COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century," the ministry said in a statement. The COMPACT initiative was launched to drive transformative change across key pillars of cooperation such as defence, trade and technology.

Under the COMPACT initiative, both countries resolved to enhance trade ties and set a new goal of $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Both sides recognised that fair trade terms are imperative to reach the target of $500 billion bilateral trade and announced plans to negotiate the first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement by the fall of 2025.

Prime Minister Modi and President Donald Trump also announced plans to sign a new 10-year framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership in the 21st century. They announced plans to pursue new procurements and co-production arrangements for "Javelin" anti-tank guided missiles and "Stryker" infantry combat vehicles in India to meet India's defence requirements. They expect completion of procurement for six additional P-8I maritime patrol aircraft to enhance India's maritime surveillance reach in the Indian Ocean Region, a joint statement released in February said.  End
