--IMD: India May 26 rainfall at 7.5 mm, 211% above normal

MUMBAI – India received 7.5 millimetres of rainfall on Monday, 211% above the normal weighted average of 2.4 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. Rainfall was above normal in three out of the four homogenous regions of the country, but below normal in one.

Rainfall in the east and northeast regions of the country was 39% above normal at 10.4 millimetres and a whopping 741% higher at 7.6 millimetres in central India. In the south peninsula, precipitation was 454% above normal at 15.5 millimetres. Rainfall was below normal in the northwestern parts of the country at just 0.7 millimetres, 36% below the normal of 1.3 mm.

Since Mar. 1, the country has received 148.7 millimetres of rainfall, 26% above the normal weighted average of 118.3 mm for the period, the data showed.

The southwest monsoon hit Kerala on May 24, eight days before its normal onset on Jun. 1. The weather department said conditions are favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon in some more parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, north Bay of Bengal, the remaining parts of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and northeastern states, and some parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim in the next three days.  End
