Poll panel announces elections for 8 Rajya Sabha seats on Jun 19

NEW DELHI – The Election Commission of India Monday announced biennial elections to the eight Rajya Sabha seats from Assam and Tamil Nadu on Jun. 19 as the tenure of incumbents will end in June and July. According to a release by the commission, two members from Assam -- Mission Ranjan Das and Birendra Prasad Baishya, both Bharatiya Janata Party leaders -- are scheduled to retire on Jun. 14.
Similarly, the term of six members from Tamil Nadu -- Pattali Makkal Katchi leader Anbumani Ramadoss, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader N. Chandrasegharan, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leaders M. Shanmugam, M. Mohamed Abdulla and P. Wilson, and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's Vaiko – is scheduled to expire on Jul. 24.
The nomination process will begin on Jun. 2 with the issuance of the notification. The poll panel said that the last date of nomination filing is Jun. 9 and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is Jun. 12.
The commission said that voting will take place from 0900 IST to 1600 IST on Jun. 19 and the counting of votes will be held at 1700 IST on the same day. End
