MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka till Tuesday, and over Kerala and Tamil Nadu on Monday. A red alert indicates more than 204.4 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.

Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka till Tuesday, the weather department said. Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm is also likely over parts of Kerala till Tuesday, and over parts of Tamil Nadu on Monday, the department said. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of south peninsular India till Sunday, it said.

Extremely heavy rainfall is seen over parts of Konkan and central Maharashtra till Tuesday, the weather agency said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over parts of west India till Friday, and over parts of northeast India till Sunday, the agency said. Similar weather conditions are also likely over parts of east and central India till Sunday, it said.

The bureau has forecast hailstorm over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Tuesday and Wednesday. The bureau also sees heatwave conditions continuing in west Rajasthan till Wednesday.

The southwest monsoon hit Mumbai on Monday, much earlier than the normal onset date of Jun. 11, the India Meteorological Department said in a post on social media platform X. This is the earliest onset of monsoon over Mumbai since 2001, the department said.

Conditions are favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon in some more parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, north Bay of Bengal, the remaining parts of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and northeastern states, and some parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim in the next three days, the weather department said.  End
