--IMD: Monsoon onset over Mumbai earliest since 2001
MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon hit Mumbai on Monday, much earlier than the normal onset date of Jun. 11, the India Meteorological Department said in a post on social media platform X. This is the earliest onset of monsoon over Mumbai since 2001, the department said.
The department has issued a red alert warning over the city. A red alert indicates more than 204.4 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.
As of 0830 IST, the department recorded a whopping 135 millimetres of rainfall at the Colaba weather station, and 33 mm of rainfall at the Santacruz weather station. The city is likely to witness heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms with maximum wind speeds of 41-61 kilometres per hour, it said. End
