NTPC outlines INR 2.655-trln capex plan for next 3 years

MUMBAI – NTPC Ltd. Saturday said it would incur capital expenditure of INR 2.655 trillion in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), FY27, and FY28 on a consolidated basis, at an average of INR 884.9 billion per year. On a standalone basis, the power generator expects to spend INR 876.6 billion in capital expenditure over the three years, at an average of INR 292.23 billion per year, its management told analysts in a post-earnings conference call.
In FY25, the company spent INR 446.4 billion towards capital costs, up 26% on year. "NTPC's growth narrative is driven by strategic investment and capacity expansion," the management said. NTPC plans to add capacity of 7.2 gigawatt in the ongoing financial year. The company said it would add 1.5 GW capacity in the June quarter, 1.8 GW in the September quarter, 1.7 GW in the December quarter, and the rest in the final quarter. Thereafter, the company will add an average of 8 GW a year.
Currently, the state-run enterprise has a portfolio of 114 GW, with operational capacity of 80 GW and 34 GW under construction. In FY25, its board granted approval to add 8 GW thermal capacity at an estimated cumulative cost of INR 1 trillion. NTPC added nearly 4 GW capacity in the previous financial year, of which 3.3 GW came from renewable energy sources.
Its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Ltd. added nearly 3 GW of renewable energy capacity in FY25, bringing its total commercial capacity to 5.9 GW as of Mar. 31, up from 2.9 GW a year ago. The subsidiary incurred capital expenditure of INR 129.1 billion in FY25, higher than INR 90 billion in FY24. NTPC Green Energy recorded earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation of INR 21.7 billion for FY25, up 19% on year.
NTPC disclosed its March quarter earnings on Saturday. It reported a net profit of INR 57.8 billion for the quarter, up 4% on year, while its revenue rose grew to INR 439 billion, up 3% on year.
On Friday, shares of the company closed at INR 344.60 on the National Stock Exchange, up nearly 1% from the previous close. End
