NEW DELHI – The government is currently working on a Cabinet note on PM Internship Scheme to formally roll-out the flagship scheme announced in the Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), a senior government official said Friday. "PM Internship Scheme pilots are still on and the government has some findings," the official said. "Based on that, a Cabinet note is being prepared for the scheme for the next four years," the official added.

In the first round of the pilot project in Oct-Dec, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs had said that over 127,000 opportunities in about 745 districts were posted by around 280 companies across 25 sectors. Over 82,000 offers were made to the candidates. Currently, the government is running a second pilot of the scheme.

"The round two of the Pilot Project commenced in January 2025 and about 327 companies have posted more than 118,000 opportunities (both new and edited unfilled opportunities of the previous round) across the country. Of these, around 37,000 opportunities are for graduates, 23,000 for ITI holders, 18,000 for diploma holders, 15,000 for 12th-grade and 25,000 are available for candidates with 10th qualifications," the ministry had said on Mar. 7.

As per the Budget announcement, under the scheme, internships will be provided in the country's top 500 companies to 10 million youth in five years. Those candidates selected for internships will get an allowance of INR 5,000 per month and a one-time assistance of INR 6,000. The companies will be expected to bear the cost of training and 10% of the internship cost from their corporate social responsibility funds, the finance minister had said in her Budget speech in July.

According to the official cited above, companies have added more incentives on their own to the scheme to give impetus to it. Both the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry have expressed strong support, with delegations meeting Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently to discuss scaling up participation, the official said. "Many companies are giving accomodation, transport fares, food expenses because they see great potential in the scheme and also good response," the official added.  End
