India adds 1.63 mln new workers under Employees' State Insurance in March

NEW DELHI – India added 1.63 million new workers under the Employees' State Insurance Scheme in March, higher than the 1.54 million added in February, the labour ministry said Friday.
Around 49%, or 796,000, of the new workers enrolled in March were aged 25 years or lower. A total of 31,514 new establishments were registered in March compared to 23,526 in February. Around 361,000 female employees and 100 transgenders were registered under the scheme during the month, the ministry said.
The Employees' State Insurance Scheme is a social security scheme that provides medical treatment to registered employees and their families. It applies to establishments that employ 10 or more individuals. Employees earning up to INR 21,000 per month contribute 0.75% of their wages to the scheme, while others contribute 3.25%. End
