MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa, coastal Karnataka, south interior Karnataka, and Kerala till Sunday. The department also issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over central Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu Sunday. A red alert indicates more than 204.4 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.

 

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Kerala and Karnataka till Thursday, the weather department said. It also sees similar weather conditions over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Thursday, and over Gujarat and Marathwada till Tuesday.

 

Isolated heavy rainfall is seen over parts of south India and parts of Gujarat and Marathwada till Tuesday, the weather agency said. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail over parts of northeast India till Tuesday, and over parts of east and central India till Thursday, it said.

 

The bureau has forecast hailstorms over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand Saturday. 

 

Severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue over parts of west Rajasthan till Saturday, it said. Heatwave conditions are also seen over pockets of Jammu till Sunday, east Rajasthan till Sunday, and in west Rajasthan from Sunday to Tuesday. Warm night conditions are likely in parts of west Rajasthan till Saturday.

 

Conditions are favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala in the next two days, the weather agency said. It added that conditions are also favourable for the monsoon to further advance into more parts of the south Arabian Sea, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, Bay of Bengal, northeast, and the remaining parts of the Maldives and Comorin area in the same period.  End
