NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called the eight states of northeast India 'Ashta Lakshmi'--symbolising wealth and prosperity--and a power house of energy. Inaugurating the Rising Northeast Investors Summit in New Delhi, the prime minister highlighted the strength of the northeast–- Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Tripura, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland--in terms of trade and natural resources and urged industry leaders to invest in the region.

"...From trade to tradition, from textile to tourism, the diversity of the Northeast is its strength. Northeast means bio-economy, bamboo, tea production, petroleum, sports, skill, an emerging hub of eco-tourism, and a new world for organic products. Northeast is the powerhouse of energy. Northeast is 'Ashta Lakshmi' for us," Modi said.

The prime minister also said that the trade potential of northeast will increase multifold in coming years. He asserted that the northeast will be the gateway of ASEAN region--a regional grouping of 10 countries in Southeast Asia, adding that trade with ASEAN countries will increase to $200 billion in coming years.

During the inaugural session of the summit, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced that his conglomerate will make investment of INR 750 billion in next five years and will also create direct and indirect employment for 2.5 million people.

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, who also attended the event, announced additional investment of INR 500 billion in the next 10 years. "We pledged an investment of INR 500 billion in Assam three months ago, today I announce that Adani Group will invest additional INR 500 billion across the northeast for the next 10 years," Adani said.

Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the infrastructure push by the government in the northeast region to attract investors. He said northeast is becoming a key destination for sectors like energy and semiconductors.

"Better infrastructure attracts more investment and builds trust among the investors. We started infrastructure revolution in northeast. It has been becoming land of opportunities," Modi said. "We spent trillions of rupees in northeast. In just one decade, we built 11,000 kilometres of new highways in the region. The number of airports were doubled and hundreds of kilometres of railway lines were laid."

Emphasising his government's work in the region, Modi said, "We moved forward from 'look east' to 'act east' policy. There was a time when northeast was frontier region, today it is emerging as a front-runner of growth.  End
