NEW DELHI – Staying the raids against Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corp. by the Enforcement Directorate, the Supreme Court on Thursday said the probe agency was crossing all limits and violating the country's federal structure. "Your ED (Enforcement Directorate) is crossing all limits. How can there be an offence against the corporation?", Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai asked Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, appearing for the probe agency.
The apex court was hearing a petition by the Tamil Nadu government and Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corp. against a Madras High Court order in April. The high court had refused to stay the probe agency's investigation and raids on the corporation.
Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the corporation, said that the phones of employees have been cloned and their privacy has been breached. Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Tamil Nadu government, said the state has registered 41 first information reports against liquor outlet operators over allegations of corruption. Raju argued that the probe involved a fraud involving INR 10 billion and politicians were also involved in the case. End
