NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday said that Pakistan will have to suffer for water if it continues "exporting" terrorists to India. Modi's remarks came two days after Pakistan Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar asked the international community to take note of India's "illegal" suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.

"Now India has made it clear. Pakistan will have to pay a heavy price for every terrorist attack," said Modi addressing a rally in Rajasthan's Bikaner. "This price will be paid by Pakistan's army and Pakistan's economy." He reiterated that there will no trade and talks with Pakistan. The only issue left for talk with Pakistan is the return of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Modi said.

Lauding Operation Sindoor, Modi said that Indian armed forces destroyed nine biggest terrorist camps in 22 minutes in response to the Apr. 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 26 people, mainly tourists, were killed. Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 and struck at nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, killing over 100 terrorists.

Operation Sindoor has laid down three principles to deal with terrorism, Modi said, adding that India will give a befitting response to terrorist attacks on its own terms and won't pay heed to nuclear attack threats. He also said the government won't segregate between terrorists and terrorist nurturing state.

Following the Apr. 22 attack, Modi said the government gave a free hand to armed forces to respond decisively. The Indian armed forces created such a trap that Pakistan was forced to come on its knees, Modi said. Modi said that Operations Sindoor is India's new normal against terrorism.

The prime minister also stated that Pakistan can never win a war with India. In the past, Pakistan always suffered defeat in wars with India, Modi said, adding that the neighbouring country uses terrorism as weapon against India.

Tensions escalated between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The government held Pakistan responsible for nurturing terrorists and took several diplomatic and economic measures, including suspension of Indus Waters Treaty. The Indus Waters Treaty was a water-sharing agreement signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan. It allocates the use of the Indus River system, which includes six rivers--the eastern rivers Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej for India's unrestricted use and the western rivers Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab primarily for Pakistan.

Tensions further spiked between the two nuclear armed neighbours after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7. After nearly four days of military hostilities, the two countries arrived at an understanding to stop firing and military actions on May 10.  End
