NEW DELHI – India on Wednesday expelled yet another Pakistan High Commission official for his alleged involvement in espionage and asked him to leave the country within 24 hours. This is second such move by the Indian government in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. "The Government of India has declared a Pakistani official, working at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, persona non grata for indulging in activities not in keeping with his official status in India. The official has been asked to leave India within 24 hours," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
The government also issued a demarche to Pakistan High Commission's Charge d'Affaires Saad Warraich to this effect on Wednesday, the ministry said, adding he was asked to "strictly ensure that none of the Pakistani diplomats or officials in India misuse their privileges and status in any manner."
On May 13, the Indian government had expelled a staffer of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi for his involvement in espionage. Around 12 people have been arrested from Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh over the last two weeks for alleged involvement in spying activities.
Tensions escalated between India and Pakistan following last month's Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 26 people, mainly tourists, were killed. The government held Pakistan responsible for nurturing terrorists and took several diplomatic and economic measures, including reducing the strength of the High Commission to 30 from 55 and expulsion of three defence attaches. On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor striking at terrorist camps at nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which further spiked tensions between the two countries. After nearly four days of military hostilities, the two countries arrived at an understanding to stop firing and military actions. End
