MUMBAI - Domestic airlines carried 14.32 million passengers in April, registering growth of 8.5% on year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said as part of its monthly domestic passenger traffic report on Wednesday. Data suggests this growth has moderated in recent months, as carriers had registered an 8.8% on-year increase in March and 11% on-year increase in February.

 

InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.'s IndiGo retained its crown of India's top domestic carrier, increasing its market share by 10 bps in April compared to March, at 64.1%. The low-cost airline carried 9.2 million passengers in April. The Air India group too saw its market share increase to 27.2% in April from 26.7% in March. The Tata group-owned carrier flew 3.9 million passengers last month.

 

Akasa Air saw its market share remain steady at 5% in April. The ultra low-cost airline flew 713,000 passengers in April, lower than the 720,000 it flew in March. The Ajay Singh-led SpiceJet Ltd. saw its market share tumble to 2.6% in April from 3.3% in March. It flew 379,000 passengers in April, significantly lower than 480,000 in March.

 

IndiGo's passenger load factor increased to 86.9% in April from 84.6% in March, while for the Air India Group, which includes Air India and Air India Express, it was 83.3% in April, higher than 80.6% in March. Despite shedding market share, SpiceJet's passenger load factor improved to 86% in April from 84.8% in March. Akasa Air's passenger load factor stood at 93%, up 50 basis points from March.  

 

The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for April was 0.64%, the report said. In April, the cancellation rate was 1.53% for SpiceJet, 0.46% for IndiGo, and 0.02% for Akasa Air. For the Air India group, the cancellation rate stood at 0.27%. According to the report, the top three reasons for flight cancellations in April were weather-related concerns, technical issues, and operational matters.

 

In April, a total of 910 passenger-related complaints were received by scheduled domestic airline and the number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month was around 0.64, the report said. All the 910 complaints had been addressed, it added. The top reason for such complaints was flight-related problems.

 

During the month, IndiGo registered the best on-time performance at 80%, followed by Akasa Air at 77.5% and the Air India group at 74.2%. SpiceJet had an on-time performace of 60%. DGCA calculates on-time performance of scheduled domestic airlines at six metro airports – Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. 

 

At 1418 IST, shares of InterGlobe Aviation were down 0.2% on the National Stock Exchange at INR 5,429.50, while shares of SpiceJet were up 1.6% at INR 44.56 on BSE.  End
