NEW DELHI – Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar Tuesday raised the issue of keeping the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance by asking the international community to take note of India's "illegal" suspension of the agreement.

"The DPM/FM (Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister) underlined the need for the international community to take note of India's unilateral and illegal decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance," Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement. At a meeting with Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China on Tuesday, Dar also said the resolution of the Kashmir dispute was vital for lasting peace in South Asia.

At the meeting, Pakistan and China discussed the regional situation following the ceasefire between India and Pakistan and stressed the need for adherence to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and international law for maintaining regional peace and stability, the statement said.

The Pakistan minister's visit to China comes days after the military conflict between New Delhi and Islamabad in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead. India held Pakistan responsible for the Pahalgam attack and launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. After nearly four days of military hostilities, the two sides agreed to a ceasefire.

Dar also appreciated China's support to Pakistan's "sovereignty and territorial integrity", the statement said.

Following the terrorist attack on Apr. 22, India took several diplomatic decisions against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. The Indus Waters Treaty is a water-sharing agreement signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan. It allocates the use of the Indus River system, which includes six rivers -- the eastern rivers Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej for India's unrestricted use and the western rivers Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab primarily for Pakistan.

Responding to the Indian government's decision, Pakistan stated that any attempt to stop or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan will be considered an act of war. End
