MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department said conditions are favourable for the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala in the next 4-5 days. It also added that conditions are also favourable for the monsoon to further advance into some more parts of south Arabian Sea, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, Bay of Bengal, northeast, and remaining parts of the Maldives and Comorin area during the same period.
The bureau said an upper air circulation is likely to form over eastcentral Arabian Sea around Wednesday. This is likely to cause a low-pressure area over the same region around Thursday. There is also an upper air cyclonic circulation over westcentral Bay of Bengal adjoining south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu in lower tropospheric levels.
Under the influence of above weather systems, the weather department issued a red alert in Karnataka till Wednesday and an orange alert in Kerala for Wednesday. It also said very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over west coast and adjoining peninsular India till Monday.
It is for the second day the bureau has issued a red alert in Karnataka. On Monday, Karnataka received a whopping 570?ove normal rainfall at 16.7 millimetres. A red alert indicates rainfall over 204.4 millimetres in 24 hours while an orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over central Assam and another over North Bangladesh and its neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels, the bureau said. This is likely to cause very heavy rainfall with thunderstorm over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, northeast, and Sikkim for the next three days, the weather bureau said.
Meanwhile, the weather department said severe heatwave is likely over Rajasthan till Thursday. It also said duststrom with speed of 40-50 kilometre per hour is likely over west Rajasthan during the week. It has issued an orange alert in west Rajasthan till Thursday for heatwave. The weather bureau issues an orange alert when "severe" heatwave conditions persist for two days or heatwave persists for four days or more. End
