MUMBAI – Rainfall over Maharashtra is expected to increase from Monday and continue till Sunday under the influence of a low pressure area over the east central Arabian Sea, which is likely to move northwards and intensify further, the India Meteorological Department's Mumbai regional centre said.

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan and the adjoining ghats of central Maharashtra is expected during the forecast period. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 50-60 km per hour is also expected over Konkan, central Maharashtra, and Marathwada till Wednesday, the regional weather department said on Sunday.

The regional weather bureau has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall on Monday in Pune, the ghats of Pune, Satara, the ghats of Satara, Kolhapur, the ghats of Kolhapur, Sangli, Sholapur, and Ahilyanagar. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours. The bureau has also issued a yellow alert for Mumbai from Tuesday to Thursday. A yellow alert indicates rainfall of 64.5-115.5 millimetres.

Meanwhile, conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further over more parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, south Bay of Bengal, central Bay of Bengal, and northeast Bay of Bengal in the next two-three days, the weather agency said. The southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 27, with a model error of plus or minus four days, the agency said.  End
