MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall on Saturday in seven out of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions in the country. The sub-divisions include Marathwada, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Assam and Meghalaya till Sunday and over parts of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, the weather department said. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected over Arunachal Pradesh till Wednesday, over Assam and Meghalaya till Thursday, and over Tripura till Sunday, the department said. A wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty with speed of 30-50 kilometre per hour is seen over northeast India in the next seven days, it said.
The weather bureau has forecast very heavy rain over parts south interior Karnataka till Sunday, over north interior Karnataka on Monday and Tuesday, and over Kerala, Mahe, and coastal Karnataka on Tuesday. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Rayalaseema, and Lakshadweep till Friday, the bureau said.
In west India, the weather agency sees very heavy rainfall over Konkan and central Maharashtra from Tuesday to Thursday. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over parts of south-central Maharashtra till Thursday, and south Konkan and Goa from Monday to Friday, the agency said.
Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Wednesday, and over Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar on Sunday, the weather department said. Hailstorms are likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday, while dust storms are expected over parts of Haryana on Saturday, the department said.
Heatwave conditions are likely in pockets of Jammu, Kashmir, and east Uttar Pradesh till Sunday, in southwest Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, and north Madhya Pradesh till Monday, and in west Rajasthan till Friday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid weather is expected in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha on Saturday, the bureau said.
As of Saturday, conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further over more parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, south Bay of Bengal, central Bay of Bengal, and northeast Bay of Bengal in the next three-four days. End
