MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall on Saturday in eight out of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions in the country. The sub-divisions include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Sikkim and sub-Himalayan West Bengal. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours.

 

Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Assam and Meghalaya till Sunday and over parts of coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan during the next week, the weather department said. It has also predicted hailstorms over Uttarakhand on Friday and Himachal Pradesh on Monday. 


The weather bureau said heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over northeast, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and south Peninsular India during the next 5-6 days. 

 

The weather bureau said conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to further advance over some more parts of the south Arabian Sea, south Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of the Andaman islands, the Andaman Sea, and some parts of the central Bay of Bengal in the next two to three days. 

 

The weather bureau also issued an orange alert in eastern Uttar Pradesh for a heatwave on Friday. The weather bureau issues an orange alert when "severe" heatwave conditions persist for two days or heatwave persists for four days or more.  

 

The bureau has also predicted a heatwave over west Rajasthan till Thursday and north Madhya Pradesh during Sunday and Monday. Similar weather conditions are likely over Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir till Saturday, it said. Strong dusty winds are likely over west Rajasthan till Monday, it added. Over Bihar and Odisha, it has forecast hot and humid weather prevailing till Saturday. The bureau also said warm nights are very likely over pockets of east Uttar Pradesh and east Madhya Pradesh on Friday.  End
