NEW DELHI – India's unemployment rate was 5.1% in April, the first ever monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey released by the statistics ministry Thursday showed. The joblessness rate was higher in urban areas at 6.5% compared with 4.5% in rural areas.

The statistics ministry has now started releasing unemployment data on a monthly basis for both rural and urban areas. Previously, the ministry only released quarterly urban unemployment data, and annual data for both urban and rural areas. The ministry will release the Apr-Jun quarter unemployment data for urban and rural India in August.

The labour force participation rate--the percentage of persons working or seeking or available for work--was 42.0% in April. The worker population ratio, which is the percentage of employed persons in the population, was 39.8% last month.

At an all-India level, the unemployment rate was higher for men at 5.2% while for women it was 5.0% in April. The joblessness rate was highest for young women and men in urban areas. In April, the urban unemployment rate for women aged between 15 and 29 years was 23.7%. It was 15.0% for men in the same category.

The labour force participation rate was sharply higher for men compared with women. The all-India labour force participation rate was 57.8% for men and 26.2% for women in April. The participation rate was lowest for women in urban areas at 20.5%. The worker population ratio was also higher for men at 54.8%, compared with 24.9% for women last month.

Data released in April showed India's unemployment rate rose marginally to 3.2% in 2024 from 3.1% in 2023. The labour force participation rate had inched lower to 59.6% in 2024 from 59.8% in 2023. However, the statistics ministry has cautioned against comparing the monthly labour force data with earlier prints due to a change in sample design.  End
