MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department on Thursday issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, north interior Karnataka, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and coastal Andhra Pradesh. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours.
In northeast India, the weather department expects a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30-50 km per hour in the next five days. Heavy rainfall is also seen over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya till Sunday, while very heavy rainfall is predicted over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh till Friday.
Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of central Maharashtra on Thursday, the weather agency said. A wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30-50 km per hour is expected over Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and Marathawada till Sunday, and over Gujarat on Thursday.
The weather bureau forecasts heavy rainfall over parts of south peninsular India till Monday. A wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30-50 km per hour is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe in the next five days, the bureau said.
Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Thursday, and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Monday, the weather department said.
The department has warned of heatwave conditions over parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and west Rajasthan till Monday. Hot and humid weather is also likely to prevail over Gangetic West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha till Saturday.
The southwest monsoon advanced further into parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Islands, and the Andaman Sea on Thursday, the weather department said. End
