MUMBAI – Mills in India produced 25.7 million tonnes of sugar as of Thursday, 18.4% lower than 31.5 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. Sugar production so far this season is down due to a decline in crushing across major producing states such as Karnataka, Gujarat, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu.

The federation has estimated net sugar production in the country in the 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) season at 26.1 million tonnes, down 18% from 31.9 million tonnes produced last season. Net sugar production refers to the total amount of sugar produced in a region or country, after accounting for any sugar diverted for other uses, such as ethanol production. The federation expects 380,000 tonnes from the special sugar season, Jun-Sept, in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The country's average sugar recovery rate is seen at 9.30%, compared to 10.10% last year, the federation said. So far this season, mills have crushed 276.8 million tonnes of sugarcane, lower than 312.3 million tonnes a year ago. As of Thursday, four of the 534 mills were crushing cane, compared with five of the 535 during the same period a year ago.

As of Thursday, all mills in Maharashtra wound up crushing operations. Around 200 mills in the state were crushing this season, against 207 mills the previous season, according to the report. Sugar mills in the state have produced 8.1 million tonnes of sugar, down 26.5% from 11 million a year ago, the federation said.

In Uttar Pradesh, one of the 122 mills was active as of Thursday, it said. Mills in the state have crushed 95.6 million tonnes of sugarcane to produce 9.28 million tonnes of sugar so far this season, down 10.5% on year. Sugar production in the state in the current year is estimated at 9.28 million tonnes, down from 10.4 million tonnes the previous year. The average sugar recovery in the state is projected at 9.70%, down from 10.6% a year ago.

Mills in Karnataka have produced 4.04 million tonnes of sugar so far during the season, down 21.4% from 5.1 million tonnes a year ago. The federation estimates sugar output in Karnataka in 2024-25 at 4.2 million tonnes, lower than 5.3 million tonnes last year. The average sugar recovery rate in the state is seen at 8.05%, down from 9.30% last season.  End
