NEW DELHI – China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wednesday reasserted its claim over the state of Arunachal Pradesh after India's strong criticism of Beijing's attempt to rename some places in the state. "Zangnan (Arunachal Pradesh) is part of China's territory. The Chinese government has standardized the names of some parts of Zangnan. This is within China's sovereign rights," foreign ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said at a media briefing.

Earlier in the day, India's Ministry of External Affairs had dismissed China's attempt to name places in Arunachal Pradesh as "vain and preposterous". External affairs ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement that creative naming will not alter the undeniable reality that Arunachal Pradesh was, is, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India.

"We have noticed that China has persisted with its vain and preposterous attempts to name places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Consistent with our principled position, we reject such attempts categorically," Jaiswal said.

The ministry issued the statement in response to Beijing announcing Chinese names for some places in Arunachal Pradesh, which the neighbouring country claims is a part of southern Tibet.

Last year in April, too, India had reacted strongly when the Chinese government released a list of "standardised" names for 30 places in Arunachal Pradesh.  End
