NEW DELHI - The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved setting up of the sixth semiconductor unit under the India Semiconductor Mission at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh. The unit will be a joint venture of HCL and Foxconn and will attract an investment of INR 37.06 billion, the government said.
The plant, which will begin production in 2027, will manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and other devices that have displays, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a press conference.
The Jewar unit is designed for 20,000 wafers per month and the design output capacity is 36 million units per month, Vaishnaw said.
The India Semiconductor Mission is a government initiative that aims to promote the domestic semiconductor industry. Under the mission, five semicondutor units have already been set up. The first semiconductor unit in India was set up at Sanand in Gujarat by Micron.
In 2024, the Cabinet approved four semiconductor plants in India. Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd. set up a plant in Dholera, Gujarat, Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt. Ltd. set up a unit in Morigaon, Assam, and another one was set up in Sanand, Gujarat by CG Power, in partnership with Japan's Renesas Electronics Corp., and Thailand's Stars Microelectronics. Another semiconductor unit was allowed to be built at Sanand by Kaynes Semicon Pvt. Ltd. in September. End
