MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Wednesday issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Telangana, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Chattisgarh, Odisha, and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as in the sub-divisions of central Maharashtra, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, south and north interior Karnataka. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied ny thunderstorms and lightning are likely over northeast India during the next five days and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim in the next three days, the weather department said. Owing to these conditions, the bureau has issued an orange alert for Assam and Meghalaya till Friday. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Meghalaya on Wednesday.
The weather department predicted isolated light or moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of up to 30-50 km per hour over Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat during Thursday and Sunday. It said heavy rain is likely over central Maharashtra on Thursday.
The weather bureau also predicted rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over south Peninsular India and adjoining central India during the next five days. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu are likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall during the next three-four days. It also said hailstorm is likely over parts of Telangana on Thursday and issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in the state till Friday.
These weather conditions are due to multiple weather systems in the country. There is a western disturbance as a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies, and an upper air cyclonic circulation over Uttarakhand in lower tropospheric levels. Additionally, there is one over east Bihar and adjoining sub-Himalayan West Bengal.
There is also an upper air cyclonic circulations over northeast Assam in lower tropospheric levels, and one more in Gujarat in lower and middle tropospheric levels, and another in Konkan and its neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels. An upper air cyclonic circulation also lies over Andaman Sea and another over southwest Bay of Bengal adjoining Tamil Nadu coast in lower tropospheric levels.
The weather department said heatwave is likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during Thursday and Sunday. Hot and humid weather is likely in Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kraikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Bihar, and Odisha during the week. End
