NEW DELHI - Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on Wednesday. He was administered the oath by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, according to a press release issued by the President's Secretariat.

On Apr. 16, Justice Sanjiv Khanna had recommended the appointment of Gavai as his successor, following the end of his tenure as the chief justice for about six months. The government approved Gavai's elevation on Apr. 29.

Justice Gavai had joined the Bar in 1985, and practised constitutional and administrative law. He served as standing counsel for the Municipal Corporation of Nagpur and Amravati, as well as for Amravati University. From August 1992 to July 1993, he held the positions of assistant government pleader and additional public prosecutor in the Bombay High Court.

He was elevated as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003 and became its permanent judge in 2005. He had presided over benches having all types of assignments at the principal seat in Mumbai, as well as benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji in the Bombay High Court.

Justice Gavai became a judge of the apex court in 2019 and is slated to retire on Nov. 23. After former judge K.G. Balakrishnan, who became the chief justice in 2007, Justice Gavai will be the second Dalit to hold the position. As a judge, he was involved in the verdict upholding the government's 2016 demonetisation scheme and the judgment that declared the electoral bond scheme unconstitutional. Justice Gavai was also part of the verdict that upheld the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir, which conferred special status to the state.  End
