India freight traffic at major ports up 7% on year in April

AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India rose 7% on year to 71.98 million tonnes in April, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed.

 

The rise was led by container traffic, which rose 12.6% on year to 17.04 million tonnes. Crude and petroleum products traffic, which account for a little more than one-third of total cargo handled at all the major ports across the country, rose 6.6% on year in April to 21.50 million tonnes.

 

Thermal coal traffic rose 6.3% on year to 11.88 million tonnes and coking coal rose 13.1% on year to 5.67 million tonnes. The iron ore traffic rose 10.2% on year to 4.17 million tonnes. 

 

The volume of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, fell 10.1% on year to 2.34 million tonnes.

 

Among the specific ports, Deendayal port handled the highest traffic in April at 12.83 million tonnes, followed by Paradip at 12.60 million tonnes and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 8.44 million tonnes.
