-- Pakistan High Commission official ask to leave India within 24 hours

NEW DELHI – The government has expelled a Pakistan High Commission official for indulging in activities not in keeping with his official status in India, the Ministry of External Affairs said in statement on Tuesday. The official has been told to leave India within 24 hours, the ministry said. The ministry didn't disclose the name of the official.

"The Government of India has declared a Pakistani official, working at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, persona non grata for indulging in activities not in keeping with his official status in India. The official has been asked to leave India within 24 hours," the ministry said.

The ministry of external affairs also issued a demarche to the Charge d' Affaires of Pakistan High Commission to this effect on Tuesday. The decision came amid the heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad following nearly four days of military confrontations.

According to a source from the ministry, the Pakistani official was involved in spying activities. On Sunday, the Punjab police arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in espionage activities linked to a Pakistani official posted at the High Commission in Delhi. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said that the suspects were arrested for leaking sensitive information regarding the movements of Indian army. According to reports, the Punjab police had identified the Pakistani High Commission official as Danish.  End
