KOLKATA - Exide Industries Ltd. Tuesday said that it is targeting a revenue of INR 200 billion from its lead-acid battery business over the next 2–3 years, up from the current INR 165 billion.
"This (financial) year we have a very ambitious target. Our aim is to have INR 200 billion of business from the lead acid battery business in the next 2-3 years," Avik Roy, managing director and chief executive officer at Exide Industries told media persons here. However, Roy did not disclose the revenue expectations for the company's lithium-ion business during this timeframe.
Exide is setting up India's first lithium-ion battery plant with an estimated investment of around INR 50 billion. The facility will have an initial capacity of 6 gigawatt-hours. "We have land parcel of 80 acres where we can expand the project. Based on how the business performs and after around 80% of its capacity is utilised, we will consider expanding the capacity by another 6 gigawatt hour."
In the initial phase, Exide will focus on producing lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, telecom towers, data centres, and other applications. Diversification into a broader product range will be considered only in the second phase of the ongoing plant development.
Roy said that the company will also invest around INR 5 billion every year to expend its current plants' capacity and on the recycling plants. "We have three recycling units which process the lead and plastic from the discarded batteries and recycle them into lead and plastic used in new batteries," he added.
For the quarter ended March, the company reported a net profit of INR 2.55 billion over revenue of INR 41.59 billion. On Tuesday, shares of the company closed nearly 1% down at INR 375.10 on the National Stock Exchange. End
