Southwest monsoon advances to parts of south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea

MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon advanced into parts of south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and Nicobar Islands on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said. Conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to further advance to parts of south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, more parts of south Bay of Bengal, the entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands, remaining parts of Andaman Sea, and some parts of central Bay of Bengal in the next three to four days, it said.
On May 10, the weather department had said the southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 27, with a model error of plus or minus four days. In 2024, the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala was on May 30, while the bureau had predicted its onset on May 31.
The weather bureau has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in several parts of northeast India, Sikkim and some parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal on Tuesday. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours.
Extremely heavy rainfall is seen over parts of Meghalaya till Wednesday, it said. The department also sees very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, till Wednesday, Assam and Meghalaya till Saturday and in parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Tuesday.
Very heavy rainfall in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim is expected on Tuesday. In the northwest, duststorms are very likely in parts of Rajasthan on Tuesday.
The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of central Maharashtra on Tuesday. In south India, moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds are seen over coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till Saturday and over Kerala and Mahe on Wednesday, the weather agency said.
Hailstorm is also likely at isolated places in Telangana on Wednesday and Thursday, the bureau said.
Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are very likely in pockets of Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on Wednesday and Thursday, parts of Uttar Pradesh from Wednesday to Monday, and parts of Rajasthan from Thursday to Saturday, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather is likely in Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till Thursday, in Odisha till Friday, and in Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal on Tuesday, it said. End
