NEW DELHI - Mills have dispatched 470,094 tonnes of sugar to ports during Feb-Apr from the 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) sugar season output, according to the All India Sugar Trade Association. The export data has been taken February onwards, as the government allowed 1 million tonnes sugar exports on Jan. 20, it added. So far, mills have dispatched 47% of the export quota.
Assessing the current export scenario, the trade body has estimated 800,000 tonnes sugar to be exported in the 2024-25 season.
Of the 470,094 tonnes dispatched, the lion's share is white sugar at 327,972 tonnes, followed by 77,603 tonnes of refined sugar, and 18,514 tonnes of raw sugar, the trade body said, quoting data from Mumbai-based trading house Dr. Amin Controllers Pvt. Ltd.
About 25,002 tonnes of sugar was lying at ports, waiting to be loaded as of Apr. 30, the trade body said. Of the total sugar exported, 22% was to Somalia, 16% to Afghanistan, 14% to Sri Lanka, among others.
Citing the rise in fair and remunerative prices of sugarcane, the trade association has urged the government to hike the minimum sale price of sugar as well as ethanol prices. For the upcoming sugar season starting October, the government hiked the fair prices of cane by INR 15 to INR 355 per 100 kg. Mills pay farmers the Centre-fixed prices for sugarcane purchases. End
