MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra and northeast India, including Meghalaya and Tripura, for Monday. An orange alert indicates a rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours.
The weather bureau said rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds is likely to continue over western, central, peninsular and northeastern India during the next five days. Heavy rainfall is likely over the Nicobar Islands on Monday and Tuesday, it said.
The weather bureau said heavy rains are likely in Gujarat on Monday, and over Konkan and Goa on Tuesday and Wednesday. Similar conditions are expected in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Friday. Hailstorm is also likely over parts of eastern Madhya Pradesh on Monday.
Heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala is likely during the week.
Fairly widespread to widespread light or moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds with a speed reaching 30-40 kilometres per hour is likely over Himachal Pradesh on Monday.
The weather bureau issued agromet advisories and asked farmers in Andaman & Nicobar islands, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Saurashtra, Kutch, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, north interior Karnataka, south interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema to drain excess water from standing crop and vegetable crops. It has also asked farmers in eastern Madhya Pradesh to use hail nets and hail caps to prevent mechanical damage in vegetables and standing crop fields.
The department has also predicted heatwaves over Jharkhand from Tuesday, over Uttar Pradesh from Wednesday and over western Rajasthan from Thursday. Heatwaves over some areas of West Bengal may continue till Thursday. To protect standing crops, vegetables and orchards from the adverse effects of heat waves and high temperatures, light and frequent irrigation in the evening should be done, the weather bureau said.
