NEW DELHI – India and Pakistan have arrived at an understanding and will stop all firing and military actions with effect from 1700 IST Saturday, India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said. Both the countries arrived at this decision after the director general of military operations of Pakistan called his Indian counterpart at 1535 IST earlier in the day, Misri said.
"It was agreed between them (director general of military operations of the two countries) that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 IST today. Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to the understanding. The Director Generals of Military Operations will talk again on May 12 at 1200 IST," Misri said.
Before the Indian government's announcement, US President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that India and Pakistan have agreed to complete "ceasefire" and that Washington had mediated the discussions between the two parties to restore peace. Later, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, too, announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to a "ceasefire".
However, an official of the Indian foreign ministry said it is not a ceasefire but an understanding between the two countries underlining that a ceasefire is being declared when the two countries are officially at war.
The official also said that both the countries had arrived at an understanding without any pre-condition or post-condition and that all the diplomatic decisions taken with regard to Pakistan in the aftermath of Pahalgam terrorist attack, including suspension of Indus Waters Treaty, will remain effective.
On Apr. 22, terrorists killed 25 tourists and a Kashmiri local in South Kashmir's Pahalgam. In retaliation to the attack, India on Wednesday launched Operation Sindoor, striking at terrorist camps in Pakistan. Pakistan also launched strikes at multiple civilian and military installations in Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan with drones and missiles. The Pakistan army resorted to artillery shelling along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in loss of lives and property.
The Indian armed forces said Pakistan had sustained heavy losses in both land and air operations. "Over the past few days, as we have seen, Pakistan has suffered very heavy and unsustainable losses in both land and air. There has been an extensive damage to crucial Pakistani airbases like Skardu (Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir), Sargodha, Jacobabad and Bholari. In addition, a loss of air defence weapon system and radars made the defence of Pakistani airspace untenable," Wing Commander Vyomika Singh said on Saturday in a briefing by tri-services officers.
"Across the Line of Control, extensive and precise damage to military infrastructure and command control centres and logistic installations have led to a complete breakdown of its (Pakistan's) defensive and offensive capability and also Pakistani morale," she said.
Navy Commodore Raghu R. Nair asserted that the Indian armed forces will adhere to the understanding but any future escalation by Pakistan would invite a decisive response. End
