NEW DELHI – The Pakistan government Friday termed "absurd" India's assertion that Islamabad had escalated the cross-border situation with the Apr. 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed lives of 26 Indian civilians. "India has not been able to produce any credible and verifiable evidence that Pakistan was involved in the attack," a spokesperson for the Pakistan foreign ministry said in a press briefing, and alleged that India's conduct has brought the two nuclear powers closer to a major conflict.
India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Thursday said that the Pahalgam terrorist attack was the "original escalation" in which terrorists, based out of and trained in Pakistan, killed innocent civilians. India launched "Operation Sindoor" Wednesday and struck at terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir in retaliation to the Pahalgam attack, the foreign secretary said. Tensions escalated further between the two nuclear-powered countries after Pakistan attempted drone attacks at multiple targets in India and resorted to heavy artillery shelling across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
Islamabad has alleged that India has been violating Pakistan's sovereignty since Wednesday when it struck multiple places in the country and endangered "regional peace and stability". Rejecting any attempt to link Pahalgam attack with Pakistan, the country's foreign ministry spokesperson alleged that Indian leadership once again used the bogey of terrorism to advance its sham narrative of victimhood jeopardising regional peace. Pakistan also called the international community to hold India accountable for its "irresponsible conduct".
"Can any country in the world be allowed to attack another country on the basis of a social media post? India is acting as (the) judge and jury," the spokesperson said, referring to India's attribution to the social media post of The Resistance Front claiming responsibility of the attack in Pahalgam.
Criticising India for suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the spokesperson also alleged that New Delhi is weaponising water against Pakistan. "Holding (the) treaty in abeyance is unilateral and illegal. There are no such provisions in the treaty. It shows India's blatant disregard for the sanctity of (the) international treaty and sets (a) dangerous precedent," the spokesperson said, adding that for Pakistan, the Indian announcement is of no legal consequence and the treaty remains fully binding on the parties.
