NEW DELHI – Indian farmers will benefit from the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, as more water be would available for irrigation, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told the media on Thursday.

The government would work on short-term, mid-term and long-term plans to use water in a way that would help Indian farmers, he said at a press conference on the sidelines of the National Conference on Agriculture-Kharif Campaign 2025.

"The historic decision will provide more water for irrigation to states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh as well as Himachal Pradesh," he said. "This will help our country increase irrigation, agricultural land, and productivity.".

On Apr. 23, India had put the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan in abeyance a day after terrorists killed 26 people in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. This was part of a five-pronged response decided upon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security in the aftermath of the terror strike in Pahalgam.  End
