Indian telecom operators net add 2.93 mln mobile users in March

MUMBAI – Indian telecom operators net added 2.93 million mobile users in March, led by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Bharti Airtel Ltd. while Vodafone Idea Ltd. continued to lose users, data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Wednesday showed.

 

The total mobile users added in March were more than 2.77 million net added in February. This was the fourth straight month of net additions in mobile users.

 

Reliance Jio added the most number of users in March, followed by Bharti Airtel. Reliance Jio net added 2.2 million mobile users in March compared with 1.77 million added in February. Bharti Airtel net added 1.25 million users in March, slightly lower than 1.59 million users added in February.

 

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. showed improvement in March, with net addition of 49,177 users against a drop of 566,069 mobile users in February. Vodafone Idea lost 541,377 mobile users in March compared with a drop of 20,720 users in February.

 

Total mobile subscribers across India as on Mar. 31 were marginally higher on month at 1.16 billion. Within this, private companies maintained their market share at just over 92% and that of government-run BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. was 8%. Among the private companies, Reliance Jio improved its market share by 8 basis points on month to 40.60% in March. Bharti Airtel's market share was largely steady at 33.69% compared with 33.67% in February, while that of Vodafone Idea declined 9 bps to 17.75%.

 

Out of the 1.16 million mobile subscribers in India, 1.07 billion were active subscribers, according to TRAI's peak visitor location register. The register is used to measure active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile phone operator's network.
