NEW DELHI – Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday asked chief ministers and lieutenant governors of states and Union territories adjoining the Pakistan and Nepal borders to keep the State Disaster Response Force, civil defence, home guards, etc., on alert to deal with any eventuality. The home minister's directive came amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan after New Delhi carried out strikes on terrorist infrastructure in nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Shah held a security review meeting with the chief ministers Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and West Bengal, and a representative from the Sikkim government, as wel as the lieutenant governors of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs said. He also briefed the chief ministers and lieutenant governors about 'Operation Sindoor' – the strike on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

During the meeting, Shah said all states should make preparations as per the guidelines issued for the mock drill. He said arrangements should be made for smooth operation of essential services such as hospitals and fire brigade, and uninterrupted supply of essential goods should be ensured.

The home minister also asked the state governments to maintain strict vigil on anti-national propaganda by unwanted elements on social and other media platforms. He advised prompt action against anti-national propaganda.

Every effort should be made to maintain seamless communication and the security of vulnerable points should also be strengthened, Shah said. He also asked states to stop spreading unnecessary fear among the public and to take steps to spread awareness among the people against rumours.

Meanwhile, civil defence mock drills were conducted across the country on Wednesday, as per the order of the Ministry of Home Affairs to check preparedness for potential hostile attacks. Blackout observed in parts of Delhi, Shimla, Patna, Lucknow, Ranchi and several other cities, as part of the mock drill. The home ministry had directed to conduct mock drills across 244 categorised civil defence districts in the country.  End
